Let me start by saying that I’m a sports freak, from high school all the way to the pros I keep an ear out for the stand out athletes. Well the other day the New Haven Register released it’s All-State softball team and heading the first team as MVP (2 time MVP) was Kendra Friedt of the Southington (Connecticut) Lady Knights, also on the first team was Kaitlin Patterson, and Lauren Zazzaro also Lady Knights. The All-State coach of the year was the Southington head coach Ms. Davina Hernandez. Hernandez is a very accomplished Elite Athlete out of Bristol, CT. Hernandez played softball for Bristol Central High and here are just a few of her accomplishments: 2 time Hartford Courant all-state pick, New Haven Register All-state pick, 3 time All-Central Conn Conference (CCC) pick, 4 time Academic All CCC pick, 2005 Bristol Central Female Athlete of the Year, also received All-CCC in track and soccer, and was team captain. After Hernandez’s high school career she went on to play softball on a scholarship at the University of Massachusetts where she started her senior year.
Hernandez is a true inspiration not only because she went to college for the same major I’m going for (Exercise Science) but we also have something else in common, we both have Lupus. I was diagnosed when I was 14 and the summer I was to enter high school. I was an accomplished athlete myself until the sickness took toll on my body. There were days that my organs would swell and all my internals would hurt, there were days when I would be fine and all of a sudden my vision would go blurry and my bones would ache for no reason. Sometimes I would be in front of so many different doctors I actually felt like a science project. At times in the winter my blood would ware so thin that my fingers would freeze over with gloves on and I would shiver and shiver when everyone else around me just staring like I was on something and asking if I was alright. Sometimes I would try to skip my meds and my body would go through withdrawl, just as a quick example of what this sickness could cause! But I was determined to get back to living MY LIFE and I refused to be a victim to it! I started doing all the extra training that I avoided before like: running suicides, push-ups, sit-ups, running laps around the track (forgive me but I was a lazy fat lil bastard lol). I told myself that I was doing all this extra conditioning to prepare my body for any condition, and Ms. Hernandez we literally have the same condition.
Ms. Hernandez host an event that donates to Lupus patients yearly in Bristol, CT. I feel its an honor for all of us Lupus patients for Hernandez to be showing that we ALL are STILL HERE and STILL FIGHTING the good fight with this sickness. Well Ms. Hernandez todays workout is dedicated to you because YOU are a fighter, because YOU inspire so many, because YOU are an Elite Athlete, and because YOU have Lupus but Lupus does not have YOU!!! (a direct quote from Ms. Hernandez)
Today Ms. Hernandez inspired this workout, Good training to all, and to all a good fight!!!
